Epworth Sleepiness Scale
(From: Johns MW: A new method for measuring daytime sleepiness. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Sleep 14: 540-545, 1991).

This test will help you to evaluate whether you suffer from excessive diurnal sleepiness which needs to be studied.Use the following scale to choose the most appropiate number for each situation

0 = Would NEVER doze
1 = SLIGHT chance of dozing
2 = MODERATE chance of dozing
3 = HIGH chance of dozing


1.- Sitting and reading

2.- Watching television

                              0 1 2 3

3.- Sitting, inactive in a public place (e.g., a theater or a meeting)

                              0 1 2 3

4.- As a passenser in a car for an hour without a break

                              0 1 2 3

5.- Lying down to rest in the aftermoon when circumstances permit

                              0 1 2 3

6.- Sitting and talking to someone

                              0 1 2 3

7.- Sitting quietly after a luch without alcohol

                              0 1 2 3

8.- In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic

                      0 1 2 3

Add together the numbers for the eight situations to give a global score.
