Sleepy society. The challenge of knowing how many hours of sleep needs each person (Interview published in Spanish in 'La Vanguardia')

"We sleep very bad, and more in this Latin society: we go to sleep late and we get up at the same time as in other countries, so we make a sleep restriction: we do not sleep the hours we should," warns Doctor Antoni Bové. "We have a drowsy society," adds Bové, who has imposed a major challenge: "I try to answer a big question that has not yet been answered: how many hours does each person need to sleep?" Read the interview in the following link: http://www.lavanguardia.com/vida/20170313/42844993020/reto-cuantas-horas-necesita-dormir-persona.html

We sleep 20% less of what we should do (Interview published in Spanish in 'Diari de Tarragona')

We sleep less than we should. Approximately 20% less, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It is difficult to determine just one cause. But nocturnal light activity plays a key role. We voluntarily restrict sleep. We do not respect the natural cycle and we have extended the waking time. As a consequence, we need the alarm clock. "We were born with the natural alarm clock. And then we have created an artificial one that interferes daily in our body circadian rhythm, "explains Dr. Antonio Bové, a specialist in sleep medicine. He reminds that we are creating more and more light conditions, with mobile devices, tablets or televisions. "And so much artificial light does not make us want to go to sleep," he says. Sleep apnea syndrome affects at least 6% of the people

The sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome affects at least 6% of the population, predominantly male. Their consequences can be very important. In the short term it can be the reason of traffic accidents because it often causes excessive daytime sleepiness making it very easy to fall asleep in situations of rest, such as driving . The same happens when important decisions should be taken as these can be wrong due to lower alertness of the person affected with the sleep apnea syndrome. If your partner or roommate notices that you snore a lot and from time to time you stop breathing while sleeping it is likely that you suffer from this disorder. You should visit your doctor to study your case since it is likely that it can be treated successfully, and you could solve the whole problem.
